One of the skincare trends that we are seeing at Miraval currently is the use of face oils. Think of face oils like vitamins for your skin. Be sure to stick with your regular moisturizer for daytime (and sunscreen too) and save the face oil serum for night time, after you wash your face. This way, your skin gets tons of time to fully absorb the benefits from the amazing ingredients while you're sleeping.
In your late 30s and early 40s, wrinkles suddenly look deeper because the skin's natural oils decrease; the moisture barrier breaks down and the skin dries out. Most skincare creams contain a little oil, but not enough to make a big difference in water loss. Because oils are lipophilic (fat-liking) they pass though the lipid layer of the skin much faster, preventing water loss which allows them to plump the skin and moisturize more effectively.
When you look at younger skin you are seeing skin at its healthiest, where the skin cells are held together by an abundance of oil. As we age, we produce less of these important naturally occurring oils that give our skin a healthy glow. Adding oils back in topically, can give your skin a healthy lipid barrier, allowing it to retain more moisture and prevents dehydration. When face oils are applied to the skin, they are absorbed directly into the top layers of the epidermis and many times one can see immediate results from the first application. Some face oils can even help fight acne however the trick is finding the right one for your type of skin.
I am fortunate to have access to some of the best face oil serums. Here are some of my favorites:
- Clarins has three face oils targeting three common skin care concerns: Lotus Face Oil for combination to oily skin; Santal Face Oil for dry skin and Blue Orchid Face Oil for dehydrated skin. These are used in our Anti-aging Facials at Miraval
- Red Flower's face oil is for all skin types; The Essential Omega Fresh Berry-Oil Serum will replenish, balance and nourish the skin. This face oil is full of anti-oxidants like vitamin C and E. Miraval’s Nurture Facial incorporates this terrific serum.
- Dr. Dennis Gross’ Vitamin D serum/oil filled with anti-oxidants, also known as the “sunshine vitamin” it helps fight free radicals and smooth fine lines. I love this as part of Miraval’s Renew & Restore Facial series.
