CREATING A SACRED LABYRINTH AT HOME

Labyrinths are serene, patterned paths that invite you to walk mindfully in a form of moving meditation. Focal points of holy spaces for thousands of years, labyrinths are incredible tools for developing self-compassion and liberating yourself of emotional burdens.

You can create a labyrinth in your own home or yard using rocks, pavers and ropes. Using these materials, build a singular, circular path that leads you to a central point. Once you have created your labyrinth, here are a few tips for you to set off on your personal sacred journey.

Mindful Tips for Walking Your Labyrinth:

  • Before you begin, be seated for a few moments to quiet your heart and mind.
  • Quietly begin at the entry point without haste or judgment.  If you wish, you may softly sound a singing bowl to signal the beginning of your sacred journey.
  • Allow yourself to find a comfortable pace. You can walk, run, skip, dance, crawl, laugh, cry, sing or be silent.  There is no wrong way.
  • It is helpful to start with an intention, a prayer or a mantra.  You may want to stop and rest or reflect.  At each turn, feel free to step outside the path and be still.
  • If, by chance, you find yourself lost or confused, feel free to walk off the labyrinth and begin again.
  • When you reach the center, you can stand, kneel, sit or lie down.  Stay for as long or short a time as you wish.  When you are ready, return along the same path through which you entered.
  • Many opt to carry a small stone — indicative of a burden you’d like to release — to be left behind at the center of the labyrinth.
  • As you exit the labyrinth, you may wish to turn and bow toward the center, acknowledging and reverencing your sacred journey.
  • Take a few moments after your walk to reflect and journal your sacred experience with the labyrinth.
